Iranian President Hassan Rawhani encouraged a large segment of young people to participate in parliamentary elections through calling the image of Khatami and waving it as an extension of reformists’ movement. On the other hand, the head of judiciary, Sadeq Amoli Larijani announced that the Prosecutor of Tehran practiced media prohibition based on legal documents against Khatami. This conduct reveal a sort of conflicting statements about who imposed a “media isolation” on the Presidential Reforms of the Government whether from the National Security Council of Iran, which is headed by Hassan Rawhani, or from the judiciary. This conduct also suggests that Rawhani exploits the popularity of Khatami, but he does not want to open the door for his return to the political life in Iran. More events support these arguments, which comprise memories of the reform movement that have been associated in the recent days with the attack against the principle of jurist leadership. The profanities of supreme leader in public demonstrations in Tehran streets represented another event, which caused the Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij to intervene to suppress objections marches on streets.
During the visit of the Iranian president, Hassan Rawhani, to the city of Yazd, the birthplace of his predecessor, Mohammad Khatami where, Hassan Rawhani described Mr. Khatami as a dear brother adding that no one can forget the name and greatness of those who served people. This compliment happened after two days of Rawhani’s obligation of media restriction on Khatami that was not issued by the Supreme Council for National Security. The judiciary spokesman, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ajayi, clarifies that the president may have forgotten or stated that the media restriction was not issued by the Council of National Security. However, it is valid by a decision of the Council during the previous and current government under number 298.
The consequences of the Green Movement that took place in Iran following the announcement of the candidate victory during rule of the outgoing president, Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad in the presidential election of 2009 affected a number of Iranian regime’s symbols. Hussein Mousavi, the presidential candidate, his wife, Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi, were placed under house arrest in their homes. Moreover, the most supporter in the election, Mohammad Khatami, has a media prohibition, while the chairman of the Experts Council, Hashemi Rafsanjani did not nominate himself, either to object what happened in 2009, or to respond to supreme leader dissatisfaction of continuing the rule of the country, and what follows of failing in reaching Al-Shura Council.
During the election campaign of the presidential supreme that took place in 2013, Hassan Rawhani promised his electors to release the Green Movement leaders including Khatami. However, his promise does not see light only after three years of his presidency.
A question to be raised here is that; ‘’is the situation of Mohammad Khatami will be developed?’’ Will he be imposed to house arrest? Alternatively, harassment is remaining with the existence of maneuver margin of freedom and democracy, which Iranian regime is talking about.
The possibility of imposing house arrest on Khatami has evidences, Khatami was supposed to take part in Mirhossein Mousavi’s daughter marriage ceremony, Narcissus, during the past few days showing hard determination to participate in the ceremony of Mrs. Mousavi marriage, but the security guards prevented him from going out. Siege of Khatami extent of preventing him from participating in the annual commemoration of his sister’s death in his hometown Ardakan Byazd. In this regard, the judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ajayi said that the case was not the exiting of Mr. Khatami his home, but entering it. Prevention came as a result of the decision of the Attorney General.
Furthermore, the Executive Director of the newspaper (Ettelaat), Mahmoud Daia has been called up to the special clergy court after publishing a Persian version of the interview between the president of reforms government and Al-Safir Lebanese newspaper, and to remove the dialogue from the newspaper pages and website.
Security forces were very much concerned with Khatami impact strength and movement on people; especially the youth which appeared clearly in the masses of activists welcoming him on social media. The majority of these masses are young people sending video messages via Khatami’s own channel on “Telegram” social communication site, in which he called masses of people to participate in the elections.
The security and military forces consider that allowing Khatami to return once again to the political arena. These communications probably represent a call for the reformists experience took place among 1997-2005. A similar attempt to the sixth session of Al-Shura Council, in which the reformist movement won an absolute majority, the council chaired by Mehdi Karroubi who is currently under house arrest.
This period accompanied liberal laws especially the reform of the Penal Code and events of ‘’campus fights’’ in Tehran University of fights in campus and demonstrations in front of the Iranian commander office, Ali Khamenei. Ali led 24 high-level commanders in the Revolutionary Guards threatening Khatami to suppress demonstrations or they will use a metal hand to stop it.
In contrast, the imposing of house arrest of Khatami found opposition from those who consider Khatami one of regime figures and pillars of the revolution in Iran. Khatami is considered as the most senior minister for the Ministry of Islamic Guidance and Culture, the supervisor of the “Kayhan”, and kinsman of the republic founder Ruhallah Khomeini family, Khatami the pedigree of the Repertory Shiite Musa al-Sadr.
Importantly, in spite of ill-treatment Khatami received, he called for greater margin of democracy in Iran, within the system frameworks of elections. He called people during the last elections to go to vote choosing “Ameed’s” list, which belong to those whom pointed to as reformers. Moreover, Khatami’s keeping out from house arrest would contributes to give the regime a good image in front of his critics for allowing them to oppose.
Following these events the regime practiced a similar political abuse with each of Mirhossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi, and the former successor of Khomeini, Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri who have been imposed to under house arrest from 1997 up to 2009. It is most probably that Khatami will be away from house arrest under Khatami’s affiliation for two senior clerics houses, Khomeini and Alsader, which protects him from the fate of Mousavi, Karroubi and Montazeri.
